On the 22nd June 1948, the Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury Dock, Essex, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the story of London.

 

In 2023, to mark the 75th anniversary and to pay homage to the legacy of the Windrush generation and all of it's contributions to the vibrant and diverse culture of modern Britain, Pegasus will be premiering WINDRUSH The Opera. 

 

The 802 Caribbean citizens onboard were the first of 500,000 Commonwealth citizens who migrated to Britain between 1948 and 1971. They became British citizens who helped to build the "mother country" and who contributed to the strong diverse culture we have in London and the United Kingdom today. 

 

Many faced prejudice and racism and this still happens today. Pegasus Opera Company's WINDRUSH The Opera is just another chapter in fighting for social change, equality and diversity.

This page will begin with mood boards and ideas as our commission evolves and will slowly become an archive of the journey taken to create this opera as a moment in the Windrush history and legacy.

Where will it be?

It's early days and there is much to decide! But currently we intend to premier in London and then tour to Liverpool and Bristol! This is not to say that we won't be coming to a venue near you outside of these amazing cities, so bare with us! 

Who is writing the opera?

This is really exciting information that we would love to share with you, but for now you'll have to wait just a little longer for the big announcement. However, we can confidently promise that the information is worth the wait! We're so excited to bring to you a diverse creative team to write the music, the libretto and direct the show. We have a powerhouse team in mind, we're just dotting the I's and crossing the T's! 

When can I see it? 

Currently we have in mind that we would like to premiere on the 7th anniversary of the Windrush docking in Tilbury Docks. 

Therefore the 22nd of June 2023 seems fitting, but nothing is set in stone. 


In the mean time you may hear parts of the
new composition in our concerts throughout the year and at fundraisers and events for WINDRUSH The Opera.

Time's are hard for

you want to  contribute to

this very important

production, we would 

greatly appreciate it.
